It is actually called Piazza Umberto I, but since the 1930s it has been called the piazzetta, but the people of Capri call it a Chiazz

The square, located on the edge of the historic center of Capri, once housed the ancient local market; Today, however, it is the center of the island's social life and is often called a "living room of the world"

as tiny as it is the center of the island's social life, so much so that it deserves the nickname "Living Room of the World". It has always been the center of life on Capri, but once upon a time it was simply the fish market square.

You can get there from the terrace of the funicular, which offers a picturesque view. The tables of the four bars, all very famous, that overlook the square provide the furniture, while the curtain of buildings, all renovated in the seventeenth century, is the backdrop. The Palazzo Cerio, a construction from the Angevin period, dates back to the second half of the 14th century.

Next to it is the Clock Tower, which was actually originally the bell tower of the cathedral of Santo Stefano, inside which materials belonging to Tiberius' Villa Jovis were reused for the floor.

On the south-east side of the square is the town hall, an 18th century building that occupies the buildings that once belonged to the Bishop's palace, which is still connected to the church of Santo Stefano by a covered passageway.

In realtà si chiama Piazza Umberto I, dagli anni '30 è stata però denominata la piazzetta, ma i capresi la chiamano a Chiazz

La piazza, situata ai margini del centro storico caprese, anticamente ospitava l'antico mercato locale; oggi è invece il centro della vita sociale isolana ed è spesso definita un «salotto del mondo»

tanto minuscola quanto centro della mondanità dell'isola, così da meritare il soprannome di "Salotto del mondo". È sempre stata il centro della vita di Capri, ma un tempo era semplicemente la piazza del mercato del pesce.

Vi si giunge dalla terrazza della funicolare da cui si gode un pittoresco panorama. I tavolini dei quattro bar, tutti famosissimi, che si affacciano sulla piazza fanno da arredamento, mentre la cortina di palazzi, tutti ristrutturati nel Seicento, ne è la scenografia. Il Palazzo Cerio, una costruzione di epoca angioina, risale alla seconda metà del 1300.

Accanto la Torre dell'Orologio, in realtà in origine campanile della cattedrale di Santo Stefano, all'interno della quale sono stati riutilizzati per il pavimento materiali appartenenti alla villa Jovis di Tiberio.

Sul lato Sud-Est della piazza è il municipio, un palazzo del '700 che occupa gli edifici un tempo appartenenti al palazzo Vescovile che infatti resta tuttora collegato da un passaggio coperto alla chiesa di Santo Stefano.
